MINE-WORKERS UNION SETS K10,000 BENCHMARK FOR LOWEST PAID WORKERS AHEAD OF 2025 COLLECTIVE BARGAINING

The Mine-Workers Union of Zambia-MUZ-has set K10,000 as a bench mark for the lowest paid workers after the impending collective bargaining process for 2025.

Union president Joseph Chewe has disclosed that proposals for the upcoming collective bargaining process will be based on aligning miners’ salaries to meet the basic needs basket, which is almost K10,000 for a family of five.

Mr Chewe says the criteria to determine percentages of increase for salaries will be based on how low a particular mine pays its workers below K10, 000.

He says this is to ensure that the lowest paid employees in the mining sector, get basic pay to match the Jesuit Center for Theological Reflections-JCTR Basic Needs Basket.

Mr Chewe believes the mines are capable of increasing the workers’ salaries to this figure, as unions uphold their obligation to negotiate for favorable conditions of service for miners.
