KENYAN OFFICIAL VOWS TO SHUT BARS ACCUSED OF HOSTING NAKED DANCERS

Kirinyaga County Commissioner Shufaa Omar Mwijuma has vowed to shut down bars in the Kenyan county accused of hosting nude dancers, saying the practice will not be tolerated.
Mwijuma said authorities had identified two establishments in Kagio and Kutus where the alleged activities take place. She said one bar in Kagio reportedly hosts dancers every night, while another in Kutus allegedly brings them in on Fridays.
The commissioner said she would personally lead an operation on Thursday to close the Kagio establishment. She described the alleged practice as unacceptable and said the authorities would take action against the outlet.
Mwijuma said authorities had gathered intelligence on the two establishments and questioned whether the Kutus outlet should have been granted an operating licence. She said both businesses should be shut down.
The commissioner was speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting involving chiefs and assistant chiefs from Gichugu, which focused on efforts to curb illicit and counterfeit alcohol in Kirinyaga County.
Participants identified the uncontrolled licensing of bars and the nighttime distribution of alcohol as some of the challenges affecting efforts to tackle illicit and counterfeit alcoholic drinks.
Meanwhile, National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) Deputy Director for Compliance Amos Warui called for residents to be involved in the next licensing cycle, saying communities should have a say in the number of alcohol outlets operating in their areas.
Warui said licensing of bars and restaurants remained a concern in Kirinyaga, noting that licensed outlets are permitted to operate between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m.
He said authorities were seeking greater community involvement in the fight against illicit alcohol, with Kirinyaga serving as part of broader efforts to address the problem across Kenya.
