JOURNALIST, SOCIAL WORKER ARRESTED OVER QUESTIONABLE PROPERTY WORTH OVER K5 MILLION
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested and jointly charged an Executive Officer in the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS), Veronica Chisanga Kabwe, and a Senior News Editor at the Zambia News and Information Service (Zanis ), under the Ministry of Information and Media, Chimangeni Banda (in photo), for possession and concealment of properties worth over Five million, six hundred thousand Kwacha (K5,600,000.00).
Ms. Veronica Chisanga Kabwe, 52, of Plot No. 13329, Chalala, Lusaka, has been jointly charged with Mr. Chimangeni Banda, 52, also of the same residential address, on two (2) counts of Possession and Concealment of Properties Reasonably Suspected of Being Proceeds of Crime, contrary to Section 71(1) of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act No. 19 of 2010 of the Laws of Zambia.
The particulars of the offences in the two counts against Ms. Veronica Chisanga Kabwe and Mr. Chimangeni Banda are that, on dates between 1st January 2020 and 31st December 2025, in Lusaka District, jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown, they allegedly possessed and concealed property number L/38829, a semi-detached three-bedroomed house, and property number L/13329, a four-bedroomed house, both properties valued at Three million, two hundred and seventy thousand Kwacha (K3,270,000.00), reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime.
Ms. Veronica Chisanga Kabwe has also been separately charged with nine (9) counts of Possession and Concealment of Properties Reasonably Suspected of Being Proceeds of Crime, contrary to Section 71(1) of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act No. 19 of 2010 of the Laws of Zambia.
The particulars of the offences in the nine counts against Ms. Kabwe are that, on dates between 1st January 2020 and 31st December 2025, in Lusaka District, jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown, she allegedly possessed and concealed three motor vehicles, namely, a Toyota Hilux, a Toyota Dyna light truck and a Toyota RAV4, with an estimated combined value of One Million Kwacha (K1,000,000.00), as well as funds and Government bonds amounting to One million, three hundred and forty-six thousand, five hundred and seventy-eight Kwacha (K1,346,578.00) held in various bank accounts, all reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime
The suspects have since been released on bond and are expected to appear in court soon.
The Anti-Corruption Commission will continue to investigate and take appropriate action against individuals suspected of engaging in corruption and concealing properties reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime. The ACC further urges members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of corruption to the Commission.
