A heavy presence of police officers and equipment have sealed Veekay Motel along Great North Road to guard an illegal National Democratic Conference (NDC) General Conference being held in Kabwe town.
More CDF police vehicles from Serenje, Nangoma, Mumbwa Mwembeshi and Keembe constituencies have arrived to reinforce the anti-riot gear and vehicles that have been stationed in Kabwe.
“We have dealt with the PF and Tutwa’s Memorial, now we are doing an NDC assignement” police men at the scene confirmed the development.
Organizers have said Ministry of Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Josephs Akafumba has organised the Conference and has assured that office bearers of the NDC will be changed on Monday to replace the legitimate members led by Saboi Imboela.
When contacted for comment, NDC President, Saboi Imboela expressed ignorance about the General Conference.
“We do not have a General Conference taking place in Kabwe. Matters are still in Court and those holding the so-called General Conference are Akafumba’s people who are UPND.” she said.
Akafumba led a faction that joined the UPND Alliance in the run-up to elections and was appointed Permanent Secretary after UPND won the elections.
In similar fashion, the State facilitated, sponsored, and protected a suspended Patriotic Front member, Miles Sampa to hold an illegal Conference in October 2023 and supplanted the legitimate leadership of the Party by changing Office Bearers at the Registrar of Societies.
