March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese Zuma has launched a fierce attack on President Cyril Ramaphosa following his national address on illegal immigration, arguing that the President’s response falls far short of what many South Africans are demanding.
Speaking after Ramaphosa’s speech, Ngobese Zuma claimed the President was either not properly briefed about the scale of the challenges linked to illegal immigration or had failed to address them adequately. She argued that the government’s proposals would not solve the problems being experienced in communities across the country.
Ngobese Zuma has been one of the most outspoken voices in the immigration debate, repeatedly calling for stronger border controls, stricter enforcement of immigration laws and tougher action against employers who hire undocumented foreign nationals.
Her criticism comes after Ramaphosa condemned vigilantism, violence and xenophobia while insisting that only law enforcement agencies have the authority to enforce immigration laws. The President also pledged to strengthen border security and crack down on immigration violations.
The exchange has deepened divisions over one of South Africa’s most controversial issues, with supporters of Ngobese Zuma saying the government is not doing enough, while others back Ramaphosa’s call for lawful and constitutional solutions.
