Caritas Zambia has expressed concern over President Hakainde Hichilema’s alleged use of “working visits” during the campaign period, arguing that the arrangement creates an uneven playing field for other political parties.
Speaking to Phoenix News, Caritas Zambia Executive Director Fr. Gabriel Mapulanga said the organisation fears public resources is being used to facilitate activities that resemble campaign events.
He also questioned the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s exemption of the President from the official campaign schedule, saying it gives the Head of State an unfair advantage ahead of the August elections.
Fr. Mapulanga further described the postponement of some opposition rallies due to presidential or vice-presidential working visits as unfair, while acknowledging that the President is constitutionally entitled to undertake official duties.
He called for a review of such provisions during election periods.
