Hichilema hails Guy Scott as selfless statesman and defender of Zambia’s Constitution
President Hakainde Hichilema has paid glowing tribute to former Vice-President Guy Lindsay Scott, describing him as a selfless statesman whose unwavering commitment to constitutionalism, national unity and public service helped steer Zambia through one of its most challenging political periods.
Lusaka, 21 July – Speaking during the State funeral service for Dr Scott at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Monday, President Hichilema said the late former Vice-President would be remembered as a patriotic leader who consistently placed the interests of Zambia above personal ambition and championed the ideals of inclusion and national cohesion.
The President said Dr Scott’s life demonstrated extraordinary dedication to the country despite having the academic credentials and opportunities to build a career elsewhere in the world.
He noted that the former Vice-President, an economist who earned a Doctorate in Cognitive Sciences (Artificial Intelligence) from the University of Sussex, chose instead to devote his knowledge and expertise to serving Zambia.
Throughout his career, Dr Scott held several key public offices, serving as a public servant, Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister and eventually Vice-President, making significant contributions to the country’s governance and development.
President Hichilema said one of Dr Scott’s defining moments came in 2014 following the death of President Michael Sata, when Zambia faced political uncertainty and an intense succession battle within the then-ruling Patriotic Front.
He said despite the pressure surrounding the transition, Dr Scott remained steadfast in defending the Constitution and ensuring that Zambia experienced a peaceful transfer of power.
“Guy provided leadership and the nation sometimes must reflect on such critical moments and see who helped us,” President Hichilema said.
The Head of State urged Zambians to honour Dr Scott’s legacy by embracing patriotism and placing national interests above political and personal differences.
With the August 13 general election approaching, President Hichilema called on political leaders and citizens alike to uphold the country’s long-standing motto of “One Zambia, One Nation” by conducting peaceful campaigns centred on policies and ideas rather than violence.
“Let us work for inclusion and not exclusion during this period. Let us talk peace and not fuel violence towards this election. It’s a competition to serve, it’s not competition to fight to injure,” he said.
President Hichilema said Dr Scott’s contribution to Zambia’s democratic development and national unity would remain permanently etched in the country’s history, describing him as a leader whose example should inspire both present and future generations.
