HAPPENING NOW: POWER PLAY! MNANGAGWA SIGNS NEW LAW THAT RESHAPES ZIMBABWE’S FUTURE

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has signed the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Act into law, triggering one of the most far-reaching constitutional changes since the country’s 2013 Constitution and dramatically redrawing Zimbabwe’s political landscape.

The new law extends presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years, meaning Mnangagwa’s current tenure could run until 2030 instead of ending in 2028. It also introduces a major constitutional shift by providing that future Presidents will be chosen through Parliament rather than by a direct nationwide popular vote.

Government supporters have hailed the reforms as a bold step towards political stability, arguing that longer terms will reduce constant election cycles, minimise political disruption and allow administrations to complete long-term development programmes.

Critics, however, have condemned the amendments as a serious setback for democracy, saying they weaken citizens’ voting rights, reverse key constitutional safeguards and consolidate executive power.

With the amendments now officially gazetted and in force, Zimbabwe enters a new political era whose long-term impact is likely to shape the country’s governance, electoral system and democratic future for years to come.
