GOVT URGED TO INITIATE TALKS WITH DR CONGO FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF LUAPULA RIVER AUTHORITY

Power utility Zesco Managing Director Victor Mapani is proposing for the establishment of the Luapula River Authority aimed at leveraging alternative resources for power generation, particularly in the Northern circuit region.

In an interview, Mr Mapani who is urging the government to start negotiating with DR Congo to establish the facility says this will help to resolve the current challenges posed by a persistent drought situation affecting Zambia’s hydroelectric power generation.

Mr Mapani says the facility would also focus on harnessing the energy potential of the Luapula River and reduce the current dependence of power generation in the southern province.

He is of the view that the facility would facilitate the development of hydroelectric projects, as well as explore other renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

According to Mr Mapani, beyond boosting energy security, the establishment of the Luapula river authority can stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, and drive development in the country.
