GOVT CONFIRMS PRESENCE OF AFLATOXIN IN MEALIE MEAL, OVER 400 DOGS DIE

The government has confirmed the presence of Aflatoxins in ten (10) mealie meal brands that has led to the death of over 400 dogs.

According to the Minister of Health, Dr. Elijah Muchima, out of 25 samples of maize meal collected, 13 tested positive for the harmful substance.

However, when asked to name the brands that contain the tainted maize meal and animal feed, Dr. Muchima could not do so because there are ongoing laboratory tests.

The Minister has not disclosed where the maize is coming from, claiming investigations are underway.

Aflatoxin is a family of toxins that are produced by certain fungi found in agricultural products such as maize, groundnuts and cotton seed which are poorly stored.

In humans, the toxin causes acute liver damage, liver cancer and also suppresses the immune system.
