FRANKIE MUSONDA RETURNS TO AYR UNITED AFTER AFCON DEBUT, EYES RANGERS CHALLENGE
Ayr United defender Frankie Musonda returned to his club on Saturday after participating in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals with Zambia. The 26-year-old made his debut in the tournament but watched from the bench as his 10-man team fell 2-1 to Dundee United in the Scottish Championship.
Musonda, the only Ayr player currently playing international football. He played all Zambia games at the AFCON tournament in group stage in Ivory Coast but couldn’t prevent his team from ultimately finishing third in their group. He returned to Scotland and made the bench for Ayr’s league clash against Dundee United.
Despite taking an early lead through Jamie Murphy’s second-minute strike, Ayr conceded twice in the second half to lose the match. The visitors equalized in the 67th minute before finding a winner in the 82nd. The home side’s misery was compounded by a red card in the 90th minute.
Despite the disappointing result, Musonda could be in line for a return to the starting lineup for Ayr’s next match. The club faces Scottish giants Rangers in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup on Saturday in a single-leg tie. The winner will progress to the next round of the competition.
