FOR DEMANDING HIGHER PAY, KAWANA CALLS MCM EMPLOYEES RIDICULOUS

Information Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has blasted Mopani Copper Mines employees for demanding for better conditions of service.

Kawana who paid a courtesy call on Mopani CEO Charles Sakanya earlier on Monday afternoon told the media that “it is ridiculous for the miners to demand to be paid K22,000 per month.”

Workers at the Mining giant have unilaterally rejected a 10% pay rise offered by it’s Zambian led Management which sees General Managers pocketing $U25,000 equivalent to K620,000 and a general workman getting a paltry $US250 which is K6300 per month.

Workers are demanding for their 3 years benefits worked under ZCCM-IH, Regna Saturnia and a substantial salary increment a situation the Zambian government through an investor from UAE have refused to honor better conditions of service.

Kawana’s remarks came following a courtesy visit to Mopani CEO Charles Sakanya, during which he addressed the media.

The Information Permanent Secretary’s comments underscore a growing tension between the workers and management at the mining giant.

Mopani Copper Mines, led by its Zambian management, recently offered a 10% pay raise to its workforce, a proposition that was summarily rejected by the employees.

As negotiations between the two parties continue, the outcome remains uncertain. However, the resolute stance taken by Mopani Copper Mines employees underscores their determination to secure fair compensation and recognition for their contributions to the company’s success.

For now, all eyes are on Mopani Copper Mines as stakeholders await further developments in this ongoing labor dispute.
