ATI COUNCILORS JUST MET TO RENAME SIMON MWEWA LANE MARKET
I would like to put it on record that councilors did not convene specifically to rename Simon Mwewa Lane Market. The full council meeting was held to deliberate on various issues affecting the city, and the matter of the market’s name only arose through a proposal submitted by a named councilor during the Housing Committee report, the committee responsible for markets and bus stations.
While some councilors supported the proposal, others felt the timing was inappropriate. However, the important questions we should ask ourselves are: Was the proposal within the law? Yes, it was. Was the renaming necessary? In my personal view, not at all.
Another question that should be asked is: where was this proposal coming from?
According to matters previously presented before the full council by the Housing Committee, Chitambala Mwewa has unresolved issues with the council. During deliberations, some councilors expressed concern that the name “Simon Mwewa Lane” created the impression that facilities such as the Simon Mwewa Lane Bus Station belonged to Mr. Mwewa personally rather than to the council. As a result, the council has reportedly not been receiving the expected revenue, contrary to the provisions of the Markets and Bus Stations Act.
In the wisdom of the councilors who proposed and seconded the motion, renaming the market was viewed as a way of ending the political tug-of-war surrounding the facility and allowing the council to fully manage and operate any public facility even if it is named after an individual.
Even though some of us felt that the timing for discussing the matter was not appropriate, it remains true that the council did not violate the law.
