CONNECTIVITY ON CHAMA-LUNDAZI ROAD RESTORED

PRESS STATEMENT

March 10, 2024

The construction of the diversion at Lunzi Bridge on the Chama-Lundazi Road in Eastern Province has been completed and the road has been reopened to traffic.

The works on the diversion were completed on Thursday night, March 7, 2024, and the road was immediately reopened to traffic.

The approach road to the bridge was on March 1, 2024, washed away after a heavy downpour.

The Road Development Agency (RDA) immediately mobilised equipment to undertake emergency works to restore connectivity.

The area experienced heavy rains for two days, from February 29 to March 1, 2024. As a result, the Chama-Lundazi Road in Eastern Province was cut off at the Lunzi vented drift.

A 15 metres section of the approach road to the vented drift on the Chama side was washed away. River weeds brought by heavy water current blocked the pipe culverts, which led to water overtopping.
