CHIRUNDU POLICE OFFICER SENTENCED TO 12 MONTHS FOR K800 BRIBE

The Siavonga Subordinate Court has sentenced Francis Chisala, a police officer stationed at Chirundu Police Station, to 12 months’ imprisonment with hard labour for corruption involving an K800 bribe.
Presiding over the court, High Court Judge Hon. Ireen Wishimanga convicted Chisala on one count of corrupt practices by a public officer, contrary to the Anti-Corruption Act.
The charges stem from an incident between November 30 and December 3, 2020, when Chisala corruptly solicited and obtained K800 from Jeremiah Donkan Phiri as an inducement to avoid charging him with a traffic offense and to permit him to use the Chirundu-Lusaka road.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) initially arrested Chisala in July 2024 following investigations into the matter.
Following the conviction, the ACC issued a stern warning to public officers, reminding them that public office is a position of trust and emphasizing that corrupt practices carry severe legal consequences.
The sentence takes effect immediately.
