Chama Grade 7 pupil chooses death over being unmarried
A 16-year-old grade seven pupil of Chitheba Primary School in Chama District has decided to leave the earth rather than stay unmarried after her mother denied her request to tie the knot with her lover.
Loveness Zimba of Tembwe Village took her life after consuming insecticide following a disagreement with her mother over plans to get married.
The incident occurred on Thursday around 9:00 hours at Tembwe Village in Chief Tembwe’s area and was reported to Chama Police Station at about 11:00 hours.
According to information obtained by the police, on June 25, the deceased informed her mother, Mwiche Kachali, 33, that she was in a relationship with a 17-year-old of Mbubeni Village and intended to marry him.
However, her mother reportedly advised her to complete her education before considering marriage.
Following the advise from her mother who trying to only look out for her future, Loveness, became distressed and stopped eating.
Yesterday, around 06:00 hours, the mother went to wake her daughter and found her lying lifeless in her room, with insecticide found near the body.
Eastern Province commanding officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the death.
“An inquiry file was opened,” Mweemba said aas investigations are ongoing.
