CAF Champions League: Sundowns secure revenge and top spot with win over

Mamelodi Sundowns gained sweet revenge over TP Mazembe with a 1-0 home win on Saturday to finish top of their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League group.

A first-half penalty by Namibian striker Peter Shalulile was enough to earn the three points for Sundowns and avenge their loss to the DR Congo giants earlier in the campaign.

The decisive spot-kick came in the 38th minute after Mazembe defender Tandi Mwape was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area.

Shalulile kept his composure to slot past keeper Ibrahim Mounkoro and give Sundowns a lead they never relinquished.

It completed a reverse of the pair’s meeting in November when Mazembe edged a tight contest 1-0 in Lubumbashi.

But this time it was South African champions Sundowns who prevailed to finish top of Group A on 13 points.

The victory means they are in for the quarter-final draw, much to the delight of coach Rulani Mokwena.

Mazembe ended up in the second spot on 10 points but will be frustrated not to gain revenge themselves after defeat last time out.

The date for the draw for the last eight will be announced in due course, where Sundowns will fancy their chances of progressing further with home advantage in the second leg.
