AN 11-YEAR-OLD BOY LOSES HAND AFTER GRENADE EXPLODES
Hand grenade explodes in 11-year-old’s hand!
AN 11-year-old boy of Mazabuka has sustained serious injuries after a hand grenade he picked up exploded in his hands.
The incident happened on Sunday in Simwaba Village, Chief Mwanachingwala, and was reported to Mazabuka Police Station on September 14, 2026 at 16:49 hours by Harrison Mankoli, 33, of the same village.
According to Southern Province commanding officer Moono Namalongo the boy and his mother had gone to Tandabale Market in Magoye Township to buy groceries.
While they were walking back home, the boy, who was walking behind his mother, picked up a hand grenade and allegedly pulled the pin. The device detonated immediately.
The blast left the juvenile with multiple injuries. He sustained deep cuts to his right hand, a cut below his left eye, and cuts to the abdomen.
His mother rushed him to Mazabuka General Hospital. Police who visited the hospital later found the boy admitted and in a stable condition.
Doctors had to amputate his right hand.
Namalongo said police officers also proceeded to the scene where they recovered fragments of the grenade.
He said an inquiry file has been opened and investigations are ongoing to establish how the explosive ended up in a public area.
Police have since appealed to members of the public, especially parents and guardians, to sensitize children against picking up unknown objects.
