AMOS CHANDA DENIES K3 MILLION DEBT CLAIM BEFORE LUSAKA HIGH COURT

AMOS CHANDA DENIES K3 MILLION DEBT CLAIM BEFORE LUSAKA HIGH COURT

Former State House Press Aide Amos Chanda has denied allegations that he owes money lender Bruce Choongo K3 million, in a matter before the Lusaka High Court.

In his defence filed through his lawyers, Mr. Chanda admits that the two parties entered into a loan agreement, but disputes the amount he personally received. He maintains that he received K1.5 million, repayable within six months, and not K3 million as claimed by Mr. Choongo.

According to Mr. Chanda, although K3 million was transferred by Mr. Choongo to a third party, Vitalis Masapo, Mr. Masapo subsequently transferred only K1.5 million to him.

Mr. Chanda further states that the parties agreed on an interest rate of 20 percent over the six-month repayment period and denies breaching the terms of their agreement.

He says subsequent repayment arrangements and proposals made through his lawyers were entered into in good faith and were intended to facilitate settlement of the outstanding debt.

Mr. Chanda says he paid K200,000 and a further K50,000 in April 2026, arguing that the payments demonstrate his continued willingness and intention to settle the outstanding amount.

While he admits that the debt has not been fully settled, Mr. Chanda denies willfully refusing to honor his obligations.

He has also denied that Mr. Choongo suffered losses or damages warranting compensation or exemplary damages, arguing that no conduct has been pleaded that would justify such an award, including the claim for costs.

The matter is before the Lusaka High Court.
