MET ADVISES FARMERS TO DELAY PLANTING RAIN DEPENDANT CROPS DUE TO HIGH TEMPS

FOLLOWING a forecast indicating drier than normal weather conditions, the Meteorological Department has advised farmers to delay planting rain dependant crops.

The Department has however, advised those who have already planted to adopt irrigation methods.

The weather forecast in the country has indicated drier than normal weather conditions from December to December 10, 2024.

This is according to the Meteorological bulletin issued on December 5, 2024.

“Farmers should delay planting rain dependant crops or adopt irrigation methods, farmers who have not planted should wait until the moisture content improves, and farmers should practice crop diversity in order to strengthen their resilience and give preference to pest and disease tolerant varieties,” read the bulletin.

The Department also advised that scouting for insect pests and timely application of fungicides to prevent fungal diseases is recommended.

The Meteorological Department further advised farmers to implement soil moisture conservation techniques such as mulching, minimum tillage and use of cover crops to retain soil moisture and reduce evaporation.

“Farmers should ensure that weeding is done only if moisture is sufficient. Farmers are advised to be alert of pest and disease outbreaks and report unusual strange insects or disease on crops to the nearest Agricultural Office in your area.
