TEMWA CHAWINGA MATCHES BARBRA BANDA AT WAFCON
By Uncle Philip Banda
Malawi’s Temwa Chawinga has caught up with Zambia’s Barbra Banda at the top of the 2026 WAFCON goalscoring chart, setting up an exciting battle for the Golden Boot.
Temwa scored in Malawi’s impressive 3–1 semi-final victory over Algeria to take her tally to 5 goals, matching Banda’s tournament total. With Malawi through to the final against Cameroon on Sunday, August 16, Temwa still has one more opportunity to move clear of the Zambian star.
Her sister Tabitha Chawinga is also in the Golden Boot race with 4 goals, meaning Malawi could potentially finish the tournament with one of the Chawinga sisters as the leading scorer.
The battle between Temwa and Banda is not limited to WAFCON. In the United States’ NWSL, Temwa is also closing the gap on Banda. Banda has 12 league goals, while Temwa has 9, leaving just three goals between the two African stars.
With Banda’s Zambia already eliminated from WAFCON, all eyes will now be on Temwa in the final. Can the Malawi striker overtake Barbra Banda and finish the tournament as Africa’s leading goalscorer?
The Golden Boot race is heating up — and Temwa Chawinga is coming for Barbra Banda!
