CAMPAIGN ACTIVITIES TO CONTINUE DURING MOURNING PERIOD- ECZ
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has clarified that electoral campaign activities will continue during the national mourning period, as they do not fall under activities of an entertainment nature, which are suspended during such periods.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro said the position is consistent with established precedent. He noted that during the national mourning period following the death of Zambia’s First President, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, in 2021, campaign activities were allowed to continue.
Mr Kasaro, however, urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their campaigns in a dignified, respectful and peaceful manner, while remaining mindful of the solemnity of the mourning period.
He said the Commission joins the nation in mourning the passing of former Vice-President Guy Scott and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Zambia.
In a statement issued to ZNBC News, Mr Kasaro reminded all stakeholders to continue adhering to the Electoral Code of Conduct, as well as all applicable electoral laws and regulations.
President Hakainde Hichilema has declared a five-day period of national mourning in honour of the late former Vice-President, during which electoral campaign activities will proceed as scheduled.
