Red Card Overturn: FIFA throws out Belgium’s appeal over Folarin Balogun’s eligibility.

(NAIJA TV Sports) – FIFA has officially dismissed Belgium’s challenge to Folarin Balogun’s eligibility, ruling the Royal Belgian Football Association’s appeal inadmissible and clearing the United States forward to play in tonight’s World Cup Round of 16 clash in Seattle.

The FIFA Appeal Committee ruled that the RBFA lacks legal standing under tournament regulations because it is not a party to the original disciplinary proceedings involving the American striker. The decision lands just hours before the two nations meet with a quarter-final berth at stake.

Belgium reacted with fury, accusing FIFA of procedural manipulation. According to the RBFA, they simply requested a copy of the case documents and a formal explanation. Instead, they claim FIFA unilaterally designated their letter as an official appeal, appointed a judge, imposed a deadline of only a few hours, and then promptly dismissed it as inadmissible.

The ruling is the latest flashpoint in a saga that has engulfed the tournament. Balogun was shown a straight red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1, triggering an automatic one-match ban.

In a stunning intervention on July 5, FIFA invoked Article 27 of its disciplinary code to suspend the ban for a one-year probationary period, following a personal phone call from United States President Donald Trump to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

UEFA backed Belgium on Monday morning, issuing a scathing statement that FIFA had “crossed a red line.” Nevertheless, FIFA’s Appeal Committee has now cleared the final obstacle, confirming Balogun’s place on the pitch.

The RBFA insists “all further actions remain open,” signalling a potential appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

If CAS ultimately rules Balogun was ineligible, the United States would face a forced 3-0 forfeit regardless of tonight’s result. #naijatvsports
