LUNGU’S BODY WON’T CHOOSE ZAMBIA’S Next President – Nevers

Zambia is a Christian nation and not a country where elections are decided by witchcraft or the spirits of the dead, former vice president  Dr Nevers Mumba has said.

Dr Mumba said politicians should stop using the death of former president Edgar Lungu as a campaign tool and instead tell voters what they plan to do for the country if elected.

His remarks follow recent comments by National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, who said the late Lungu would only be buried after he wins this year’s election.

“It is now becoming clear that the death of the former president is being totally used to push forward an agenda of certain individuals,” said Dr Mumba.
Dr Mumba said although Lungu had left behind a political legacy, he could no longer influence Zambia’s future.
“He has passed away and what we have from him now is a legacy of all that he did for the sake of the Zambian people,” Dr Mumba said.

Dr Mumba said portraying the late president as someone whose spirit would determine the outcome of the elections promoted beliefs that had no place in a Christian nation.

“To use him as a fetish, as a charm to foster the witchcraft that has become so rampant in our country, as a Christian nation, we oppose it and we stand against it,” he said.

He urged political leaders to focus on selling their ideas instead of campaigning in the name of a deceased leader.
“As we go towards the election, my encouragement to all of us is to tell the Zambian people what you are going to do for them,” he said.

Dr Mumba added that Zambia should continue to be guided by the Bible and the Constitution rather than superstition.
“We should base our trust on the Bible. This is the book that guides us, with the Constitution in our left hand and the Bible in our right hand,” said Dr Mumba.
