ZCTU says assault on Chinese national in Mufulira could negatively affect investor confidence!
The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions –ZCTU- has condemned the assault of a Chinese national by Zambian workers in Mufulira, warning that such acts could damage the country’s image and undermine investor confidence.
This follows an incident at the AVIC International camp site along the Mufulira-Mokambo road, where a Chinese supervisor was allegedly assaulted after confronting tipper truck drivers who had reportedly arrived late for work and were suspected of consuming alcohol.
In an interview with Phoenix News, ZCTU President Blake Mulala says while disputes may arise between employers and workers, such misunderstandings should be resolved through dialogue rather than violence.
He has further warned that Zambia should avoid actions that could be perceived as promoting xenophobia, especially at a time when parts of the continent are grappling with attacks against foreign nationals.
Mr. Mulala says violent behaviour against foreign workers sends the wrong message and has the potential to tarnish Zambia’s reputation in the region and discourage investment.
