ZIMBABWE LOWER HOUSE PASSES BILL TO EXTEND PRESIDENTIAL TERMS.

……. The bill will allow Mnangagwa to stay in power until 2030.

Zimbabwe’s lower house of parliament has passed a constitutional amendment bill seeking to extend presidential terms from five to seven years, a move that could allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in office until 2030.

A total of 216 lawmakers voted in favour of the bill, surpassing the two-thirds majority threshold of 187 votes required for its approval.

The legislation will now be considered by the upper house of parliament, where it is widely expected to pass due to the ruling ZANU-PF party’s strong influence and support.

Debate over the proposed changes has intensified, with critics accusing the government of attempting to prolong President Mnangagwa’s stay in power beyond the end of his second term in 2028.

However, supporters of the bill argue that extending presidential terms will enhance political stability and strengthen accountability in government.

The proposal follows a resolution by ZANU-PF last year to amend the constitution, with Zimbabwe’s cabinet formally endorsing the plan earlier this year.
