ZICTA DEACTIVATES 144,000 SCAMMERS

Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) says it deactivated 144,000 scammers as of December last year.

The authority last year also received and handled 30,734 service-related complaints, out of which 14,826 bordered on mobile money-related fraud.

ZICTA corporate communications manager Hanford Chaaba said in an interview that the authority profiled the types of complaints it received and mobile money services-related complaints topped the list.

“We had to profile the main issues that characterised the complaints we captured, and most of them had to do with scam messages, SIM (subscriber identity module) card registration anomalies and complaints of losing money mysteriously from mobile money accounts,” he said.

Mr Chaaba said ZICTA also recorded complaints of some mobile phone numbers being barred or deactivated, owing to stolen phones and hacked social media accounts.
