ZICTA CAUTIONS ON USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS

The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) has advised members of the general public to desist from sharing unverified information on digital platforms.

ZICTA Corporate and Communications Manager Hanford Chaaba says people must ensure they use social media platforms productively and responsibly.

He said this in a statement made available to ZANIS in Solwezi today.

Mr Chaaba said It is important that members of the general public manage their risk of exposure to fake news by verifying the accuracy of the information before sharing, and considering the credibility of information providers.

“ZICTA wishes to advise members of the general public to ensure that they use social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp or any other platform productively and responsibly,” Mr. Chaaba said.

Mr Chaaba said the inappropriate usage of digital platforms for purposes such as spreading fake news or sharing unverified and potentially malicious information could present significant risks that may lead to severe social and economic consequences.

He said recently, the authority has noted with concern the rise in misinformation, circulating on several social media platforms either targeted at individuals or corporate entities.

“By collectively committing to responsible and productive usage of digital platforms, everyone can contribute to safeguarding the integrity and viability of the digital environment,” he said.

Mr Chaaba said ZICTA will continue to implement various initiatives aimed at encouraging the responsible usage of digital platforms such as social media.

“The Authority is mandated under Section 6 (f) of the Information and Communication Technologies Act, No. 15 of 2009 to promote the interests of consumers of electronic communication services as well as ensure that the digital environment is safe for all users of ICT products and services including social media.
