Zambia’s Sixth President Congratulates Donald J. Trump on Return to the White House

Lusaka, 6th November, 2024

In a statement issued today, Zambia’s Sixth President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, joined leaders and citizens across the globe in congratulating Donald J. Trump on his historic win as the incoming 47th President of the United States of America. Trump, who previously served as the 45th U.S. President, secured victory in what Dr. Lungu described as “the most consequential Presidential poll in the history” of the United States.

In his congratulatory message, Dr. Lungu noted that Trump’s return to office was a testament to his “political discipline and leadership tenacity.” The Zambian leader likened Trump’s re-election to a phrase in the Bemba language, “Nabwelelapo pamupando,” meaning “he has bounced back into power.”

The President commended President elect Trump for his resilience and determination, particularly in light of what he described as unprecedented political challenges. “Despite being one of the most persecuted former presidents in America’s modern history,” Dr. Lungu said, “Mr. Trump has shown the world that political discipline and leadership tenacity, coupled with the correct and patriotic campaign messages, have the power to win the hearts of the masses.”

Reflecting on the global significance of the U.S. election, Dr. Lungu emphasized the impact of American politics on the rest of the world, including Zambia. He expressed hope that Trump’s leadership would help resolve international crises, specifically mentioning the Gaza-Israel conflict and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. “Although the United States may appear remote for many ordinary folks in Zambia, what happens in that country has a direct universal impact politically, economically, and diplomatically as the world shrinks into a global community,” he said.

Dr. Lungu also praised the American electoral system, commending it for allowing Trump to contest the elections despite ongoing legal challenges. He highlighted the importance of upholding democratic principles and enabling all candidates to participate freely in elections, without the influence of the judiciary being used to prevent candidates from running. “The rest of the world must take a leaf from the United States,” Dr. Lungu urged, “that in a democracy, candidates must be allowed to run their race instead of being stopped from participating by using the courts of law.”

In addition to his congratulations for Trump, Dr. Lungu also acknowledged the campaign efforts of Vice-President Kamala Harris, noting the strength of her campaign.
