ZAMBIAN MAN MAKES HISTORY AS FIRST BLACK MAYOR IN OXFORD, UK

Zambian-born Chewe Munkonge has been appointed as Oxford’s first Black Lord Mayor in the United Kingdom.



Munkonge, who moved to the UK in 2003 and later settled in Oxford in 2008, has served as a councillor on Oxford City Council since 2014, representing the Quarry and Risinghurst ward.



Throughout his public service career, he has held key roles including Cabinet Member for a Healthy, Fairer Oxford and Small Business Champion. He also contributed to education as a governor at The Swan School in Oxford from 2019 to 2025.
