ZAMBIA SET TO START POWER IMPORTS FROM TANZANIA IN 2026
By: Sun FM TV Reporter
Zambia has launched the advanced phase of its electricity interconnector project with Tanzania.
Minister of Commerce, Chipoka Mulenga, says the project has secured $292 million for the construction of the Zambian section, which includes a 330kV transmission line from Pensulo to Nakonde and four substations in Pensulo, Mpika, Kasama, and Nakonde.
The interconnector is expected to be completed and fully operational by May 2026, allowing Zambia to begin importing electricity from Tanzania and contribute to regional energy trade.
Meanwhile, Energy Minister, Makozo Chikote, has urged engineers and project experts to fast-track the implementation of the interconnector, stating that Zambians can no longer accept excuses for continued load-shedding.
The implementation of the Z-T-K Interconnection Project will enable Zambia to access a wider range of power import options from the Eastern African region and beyond. It also provides a platform for power export when Zambia has surplus electricity.
Initiated through a tripartite agreement, the high-voltage transmission line will integrate power systems and create a unified grid, opening opportunities for cross-border electricity trade.
Currently, Zambia cannot import power from Tanzania due to the absence of a direct link, but the Zambia-Tanzania-Kenya interconnector aims to change that.
The project is seen as a catalyst for economic growth, supporting Zambia’s industrialization agenda by delivering affordable, clean energy to drive investment in key sectors such as mining, manufacturing, and agriculture.
