ZAMBIA CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS CALLS FOR PEACEFUL AND FAIR ELECTIONS
The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued a pastoral statement urging all stakeholders to ensure that Zambia’s upcoming elections are conducted freely, fairly, and without violence.
They voiced deep concern over the recent increase in politically motivated violence and unequivocally condemned such acts, emphasizing that no electoral gain or grievance justifies aggression or intimidation.
In their joint declaration, the bishops stated that violence—whether spontaneous or premeditated—must not be tolerated from any side, and retaliation is never an acceptable response.
They highlighted the responsibility of party officials, leaders, and social media users to refrain from inciting or excusing violence, stressing that silence or tacit approval by leaders regarding violence among their supporters effectively amounts to endorsement.
The Bishops made a special appeal to young people, urging them not to become instruments of violence and warning against the exploitation of youth energy and courage for destructive purposes.
They called on parents, educators, and clergy to engage young people in conversations about the dignity and respect due to all individuals, regardless of political allegiance.
Furthermore, the Bishops called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), the Zambia Police Service, and other law enforcement agencies to act impartially and impartially uphold the law. They underscored that equal enforcement, free of political bias, is key to preserving public confidence and preventing further unrest.
In addition to demanding a peaceful campaign period and credible election day, the Bishops urged voters to make conscientious choices. They advised looking beyond superficial slogans, tribal affiliations, and inducements, instead prioritizing candidates’ integrity, commitment to justice, unity, and the common good of the nation.
While acknowledging that no candidate is perfect, they emphasized the moral obligation to resist bribery and nepotism, echoing the biblical principle against accepting bribes
