United Party for National Development (UPND) Deputy Media Director, Sikwindi Situla, has dismissed claims that the security risk assessment conducted by police, which resulted in the closure of courts and other government institutions, was an underhand method by the ruling party to prevent a presidential election petition.
Mr. Situla says the UPND had nothing to do with the police security assessment, arguing that the measures were prompted by insecurity that has emerged following the August 13 general elections.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Mr. Situla said the security assessment was intended to respond to threats facing the country and protect the public.
He said the UPND respects the decision taken by the police, noting that security measures are informed by intelligence from security wings.
“The UPND respects the decisions the police took yesterday because it is not a decision taken without intelligence from the security wings,” said Mr. Situla.
He has since called on members of the public to stop politicizing police operations, saying the security situation in the country should take precedence.
