UPND scoops Lumezi North as Mandevu by-election settles on four candidates

UPND candidate Anderson Banda has been declared Member of Parliament for Lumezi North Constituency without a single vote being cast, following the last-minute withdrawal of his sole challenger.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Lumezi District Returning Officer, Michael Simwinga, declared Banda duly elected after Leadership Movement (LM) candidate Nebby Manda resigned from the race prior to the nomination deadline, leaving the ruling party candidate completely unopposed.

“No candidates filed nominations from the NRPUP on the appointed dates. Mr Banda is identified as the only validly nominated candidate… no poll will be taken in the constituency due to lack of opposing candidates,” Simwinga announced.

The Lumezi North poll was originally necessitated by the ECZ’s cancellation of the parliamentary election during the 2026 general elections following the death of National Revolution Party for Universal Peace (NRPUP) candidate Clement Mwale prior to election day.

Meanwhile, in Lusaka’s Mandevu Constituency, four candidates successfully filed their nomination papers at Justin Kabwe Secondary School for the upcoming November 5, 2026 by-election, after a fifth aspirant failed to meet the requirements before deadline.

Chanda Chaikatisha of the Progressive Alliance Party (PAP), was disqualified after failing to present his original Grade 12 certificate within the granted deadline, having only submitted a photocopy to election officials.

The four validly nominated candidates who will contest the seat are: Adrian Banda, from the ruling UPND, former Lusaka mayor Daniel Chisenga, representing FDD, Ntazana Mutungwa under the Leadership Movement ticket and independent candidate Daniel Daka.

Lusaka City Council confirmed that the four validly nominated candidates will today take part in the development for a campaign time table before the official commencement of campaigns.

Mandevu Constituency, one of the capital’s largest voting population will head to the polls on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
