…as it calls street vendors illegal traders

MINISTRY of Local Government Permanent Secretary, Maambo Hamaundu, has described street vendors as illegal traders.

Hamaundu has further, issued a stern warning to traders who leave designated markets to sell on the streets, saying that they risk arrest and legal consequences.

He says the UPND government has no interest to keep and support street vending when markets are available for trading.

Hamaundu has also cautioned members of the general public to refrain from purchasing goods from street vendors.

He says this will help in controlling illegal street trade.

“If members of the public stop buying from illegal traders, there will be no motivation for the vendors to continue trading on the streets,” said Hamaundu.

Hamaundu observed that eliminating street vending would not only help control diseases but also improve the traceability of food purchases in the event of a disease outbreak.

“If you do not get back into the market, local authorities will pounce on you. Not only are you going to lose your money, but you may also actually face a custodial sentence,” he warned.
