🇿🇲 BRIEFING | Two UNILUS Students Killed in Early Morning Chongwe Crash
Two students from the University of Lusaka (UNILUS) have died while three others sustained serious injuries following a fatal road accident in Chongwe District, adding to growing concern over a recent rise in student-related road fatalities.
The accident occurred around 05:00 hours along Chalimbana Road in the Silverest area off the Great East Road. According to Zambia Police, the crash involved a Honda Fit registration number BLD 5008 driven by 22-year-old UNILUS student Patrick Musonda of Silverest.
Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said preliminary investigations indicate the vehicle was being driven at excessive speed when the driver allegedly failed to negotiate a curve, causing the car to veer off the road and crash into a tree. The impact extensively damaged the front section of the vehicle.
The victims have been identified as Edify Chikumbi, aged between 22 and 26, who was pronounced dead at Chongwe District Hospital, and Maseka Chilapala, aged between 20 and 25, who died at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital.
Musonda sustained multiple injuries and remains admitted at Levy Mwanawasa Hospital alongside two other passengers, Akufuna Mwituna, 21, and John Msenge, who are also receiving treatment.
The latest tragedy comes barely a week after three Mulungushi University students died in another road accident on the Great North Road near the university campus, reigniting debate around speeding, late-night driving, and road safety among young motorists.
Police say investigations into the Chongwe crash are ongoing.
