Twelve People Have Died In A Road Traffic Accident In Serenje District

 

TWELVE people have died in a road traffic accident in Serenje District, Central Province.

 

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said the accident happened today at about 11:00 hours at Kalwa area about 7 Kilometers North of Serenje district.

He said involved was a male driver Thabo other names yet to be known of South Africa who was driving a Volvo bus registration number DK 72HH GP with 57 passengers on board.

Mr Hamoonga said the bus belongs to Mukombe luxury bus which was moving from South to North, and also involved was unknown male adult Tanzanian driver who was driving a DAF truck registration number T850 DSN from North to South with Seven passengers on board.

“The accident occurred when the driver of the DAF truck was overtaking improperly in the process went and collided head-on with the bus which was coming from the opposite direction, both drivers from the bus and the truck died on the spot as well as five passengers from the truck died and five other passengers from the bus. The other 40 passengers from the bus are admitted to Serenje district hospital and two other passengers from the truck. The other twelve passengers from the bus escaped unhurt. The bus was coming from South Africa destined for Tanzania,” he said.

Mr Hamoonga said both vehicles are extensively damaged.

He said all the twelve dead bodies are in Serenje district hospital mortuary awaiting identification, postmortem and burial.
