A South African woman is facing serious backlash after allegedly opening a rape case against a man before later demanding thousands of rand for the matter to be withdrawn.
According to reports, the woman allegedly met the man while travelling overseas before later accusing him of rape during a visit to another country. The man was arrested after the complaint was opened but was later released without charges.
Investigators now claim the woman first demanded the equivalent of nearly R120,000 from the man, which he allegedly paid, before later asking for almost R2.4 million more to drop the case completely.
Authorities have since charged her with allegedly making a false rape claim and attempted extortion. If convicted, she could face years in prison.
The story has now sparked heated debate in South Africa, with many people saying false accusations can destroy innocent lives and reputations, while others argue that real victims must still be protected and encouraged to report abuse without fear.
