South African Politician Julius Malema Says Africa Should Adopt Swahili As Its Official Language

South African politician Julius Malema has renewed his call for Kiswahili (Swahili) to become Africa’s common/official language.

Speaking to journalists, Malema argues that Africa must move beyond colonial and imperial languages created by colonialism.

Malema said making Swahili the continent’s official language would promote continental integration, and help build a stronger shared African identity.

He also called on the government of South Africa to take the lead by introducing Swahili into its school curriculum.

Malema said he believes that if all Africans spoke a common indigenous language, it would help Africans connect more easily with one another.

Swahili is currently one of Africa’s most widely used indigenous languages, spoken by tens of millions of people across East and Central Africa.

It is the official language in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and is among the official working languages of the African Union.
