SOCIALIST PARTY CALLS FOR OPPOSITION UNITY TO ADDRESS NATIONAL CHALLENGES

Lusaka… Thursday April 17, 2025

The Socialist Party (SP) has announced that it is making deliberate efforts to have all opposition political parties, civic organisations, and concerned individuals unite in a bid to confront serious challenges currently facing Zambia.

Speaking on behalf of the party, Mr. Kelvin Kaunda, the Secretary for Mobilisation of the Politburo and Member of the Central Committee, said there were ongoing initiatives aimed at broadly unifying opposition and civil society forces.

He explained that the Socialist Party had committed itself to helping foster this unity by reaching out to as many political and civic organisations, as well as individuals, as possible.

Mr. Kaunda emphasised the urgent need for opposition parties and civil society groups to come together in a sincere and honest manner.

He stressed that the process should be driven by genuine intentions and without any single group or individual assuming they held the monopoly of wisdom.

According to him, the collective responsibility to unite was a sacred duty that both leaders and citizens shared, as it would allow them to build a formidable political and social force capable of defending the country’s dignity and improving people’s well-being.

He further noted that the unity of opposition political players would open the door for new leadership that Zambia desperately needed.

Mr. Kaunda expressed optimism that, through shared values and a cohesive vision, the opposition could ensure that the 2026 elections marked the start of a new chapter in the nation’s history — one built on strong national consensus and authentic unity.

The Socialist Party, he revealed, had already begun extending an olive branch to the Tonse Alliance, other political groupings, and various civil society organisations and individuals who are also seeking to promote unity.
