Saudi Arabia’s ‘Sleeping Prince’ turns 36 after nearly 20 years in coma

Prince Al-Waleed. He marked his 36th birthday on April 18, 2025, but he remains unaware of the years passing by, he is popularly known as the ‘Sleeping Prince’.

For the past 20 years, he has been trapped in coma, a silent world he entered after a devastating road accident in 2005 while he was pursuing his dreams at a military college.

As at Today, he still lies and he’s taken care by doctors and nurses in the ‘King Abdulaziz Medical City’ in Riyadh, where he is tethered to life through machines.

Prince Al-Waleed is on a ventilator for the past 20 years, and is fed through a feeding tube. “The prince remains on life support, relying on mechanical ventilation and a feeding tube. The last documented movements occurred in 2019, when he reportedly showed signs of limited awareness through small gestures, such as lifting a finger or slightly moving his head though these moments did not indicate a return of full consciousness.

His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud is hopeful that his beloved son will come back to life, Saying ‘ If God (Allah) had wanted him to die in the accident, he would have been in his grave now,”.
