RIGHTS ACTIVIST PRAISES POLICE ACTION, QUESTIONS TIMING OF ARRESTS
Human Rights Activist Ng’ande Mwanajiti has acknowledged the Lusaka Police for detaining United Party for National Development (UPND) members accused of harassing citizens.
The incident occurred during the funeral procession of the late UPND Lusaka province vice treasurer, Brian Mizinga.
Mwanajiti emphasized that the principle of equality before the law must be maintained, regardless of political ties or social status.
However, Mwanajiti expressed concerns over the timing of the arrests, which followed President Hakainde Hichilema’s public disapproval of the cadres’ behaviour
He argues that the police should have acted immediately after the offence without waiting for the President’s intervention.
Similarly, Activist Wesley Miyanda criticized the Zambia Police’s apparent dependency on higher directives.
According to Miyanda, this reliance undermines their competence and professionalism, as they should not delay arrests while awaiting instructions.
