RESPECT OUR DEMOCRACY AND OUR CONSTITUTION
We have seen renewed calls for the removal of Zambia’s presidential term limits and for President Hakainde Hichilema to remain in office beyond 2031. This is uncalled for and must concern every Zambian who believes in constitutional democracy.
President Hakainde Hichilema came to power through the democratic process, and we expect him to respect and protect the very constitutional order that brought him to power. Zambia’s democracy must be bigger than any individual, political party or group of supporters.
President Hichilema has secured a second term, although questions and concerns have been raised by some Zambians about the circumstances surrounding that mandate. Regardless of those debates, the constitutional limits on presidential tenure must be respected.
We therefore call upon the President to put his cadres in order and publicly denounce calls for a third term or the removal of presidential term limits.
Those overzealous UPND cadres making these calls today will not be the ones who will carry the burden of his legacy tomorrow. When history judges this administration, it will look not only at what was achieved, but also at how Zambia’s democratic institutions and constitutional order were protected
Our country will only develop sustainably when we respect the tenets of democracy, constitutionalism, peaceful transitions of power and the will of the Zambian people.
It is particularly disturbing to hear such calls when the President has only recently secured another five-year mandate. The focus should be on delivering on the promises made to Zambians—not prematurely campaigning for another term.
Zambia has been here before. Someone attempted to change the rules surrounding presidential tenure, and history recorded how that chapter ended. We must learn from our history rather than repeat it.
We, the Zambian people, will not entertain third-term politics.
Let President Hichilema finish his constitutional mandate.
Let the Constitution stand.
Let democracy prevail.
The Constitution must stand. Democracy must stand. Zambia must stand.
