Police cancel Mundubile rally in Chipata, citing ECZ directive
A planned political rally by National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) president Mundubile in Chipata was cancelled on Friday after police sealed off the venue, citing guidance issued by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ)
Chipata, 20 June – Police moved into Mpezeni Park Square, where Mr Mundubile was expected to address supporters during an afternoon campaign rally.
Following discussions with police officers at the venue, Chipata District NRPUP Chairman Menyani Zulu informed party supporters that the gathering had been cancelled.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed that police had restricted access to the area in order to enforce ECZ guidance relating to presidential campaign activities.
Mr Mweemba said the action was intended to ensure compliance with electoral regulations and to maintain law and order.
He explained that presidential candidates were expected to meet in Lusaka and agree on an electoral timetable for their campaign activities.
“The police were merely enforcing the directives and maintaining law and order,” Mr Mweemba said.
The development comes despite an announcement by the Electoral Commission of Zambia on Thursday, 19 June 2026, granting presidential candidates until Friday to continue holding rallies before attending a meeting scheduled for Monday.
The commission said the Monday meeting would allow presidential candidates to agree on a coordinated electoral timetable ahead of the forthcoming elections.
