Police arrest 27-year-old man found with K4,400 counterfeit notes
A 27-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested in Chipata after he was allegedly found in possession of suspected counterfeit Zambian currency amounting to K4,400.
According to Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba, the incident was reported to Chipata Central Police Station on July 6, 2026, around 10:30 p.m. after occurring about 15 minutes earlier at Oasis Filling Station in Chipata District.

Police identified the suspect as John Lungu, who was apprehended after allegedly attempting to use a suspected counterfeit K200 note.
The matter came to light when a security guard bought ice cubes from the Oasis Mini Mart using a K200 note that had allegedly been given to him by the suspect.
While cashing the money, the cashier noticed that the note appeared to be counterfeit and alerted a fuel attendant, Misael Zulu, 27, of Mchini Compound, who also examined the note and reached the same conclusion.
The security guard was then asked to bring the person who had given him the money. A short while later, he returned with the suspect, who claimed ownership of the cash.
When asked to produce the money in his possession, the suspect allegedly produced several K200 notes. Upon inspection, police say many of the notes were suspected to be counterfeit.
The suspected counterfeit notes were recovered and amounted to K4,400.
Police later arrested the suspect and opened a docket.
He is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to possession of suspected counterfeit currency.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
