PF DEMANDS ARREST OF UPND CONSULTANT MARK SIMUUWE OVER ALLEGATIONS AGAINST FORMER PRESIDENT LUNGU
Patriotic Front (PF) Chairperson for Legal and Constitutional Affairs George Chisanga has called for the arrest of United Party for National Development (UPND) Consultant Mark Simuuwe over his claims that former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu held meetings with regional leaders to destabilize the UPND government.
Chisanga described Simuuwe’s statement as “false, highly provocative, and extremely inflammatory,” warning that it could strain Zambia’s relations with neighboring countries.
“Recently, Mr. Simuuwe found it fit to accuse the Sixth Republican President, who the whole nation knows is actually in South Africa for a medical review, of meeting some named Presidents in the region with the intent to destabilize the UPND Government,” Chisanga stated.
He further criticized law enforcement agencies for not acting on the matter, despite the PF formally lodging a complaint with the Inspector General of Police Graphael Musamba over a week ago.
“We calmly decided to respond by following the law and filing a formal report with the Inspector General of Police. It’s been over a week now, and we have not heard any statement from the police on what they are going to do with this individual,” Chisanga said.
The PF official warned that the allegations could have wider implications beyond Zambia’s borders.
“You can begin to imagine what the police and defense forces in Zimbabwe are thinking that their president can be linked to a false story with the potential to destabilize the region,” he added.
Chisanga has since urged the government to take decisive action, insisting that Simuuwe be made to account for his statement.
“Government must take decisive steps against Mr. Simuuwe and ensure that he comes to account for his statement. If the allegations are false, it must be disclosed to the nation to resolve the potentially explosive relations we are beginning to develop with our neighbors, with whom we have enjoyed peace for nearly 60 years,” he stated.
