Simon Banda of the National Congress Party who carried the banner of Tonse Alliance has been announced winner of yesterday’s parliamentary by-election to replace runaway lawmaker Emmanuel Banda.

During campaigns, Raphael Nakacinda, the Secretary General of Lungu’s slice of PF who also doubles as the defacto project coordinator of the Alebwelelapo project expressed fear that loss of the Tonse would have fatal consequences for his boss.

The same fears were also echoed by Socialist Party leader Fred M’membe who said Zambians don’t change government next year, then former President Edgar Lungu will die of depression.

As the Electoral Commission of Zambia announced the election results, Banda of the polled the highest with a total of 13,180 votes, defeating UPND’s Severian Lungu who managed 11,093 votes.

Other candidates trailed behind, with the Citizens First’s Carlos Chama receiving 1,040 votes, independent candidate Mutale Nkole securing 247 votes and Socialist Party’s Julius Mwale getting 578 votes.

Democratic Union’s Moses Phiri polled 75 votes while Joshua Tembo of the Leadership Movement got 338 votes.

The Petauke Central by election followed the dramatic exit of runaway former Member of Parliament Emmanuel Jay Banda who lost his seat after fleeing lawful custody and failing to attend parliamentary sessions within the required timeframe.https://kalemba.news/local/2025/02/07/petauke-voters-save-lungus-life/
