“Patrice Motsepe’s Open Borders Comments Spark Huge Debate As South Africans Compare His Views To Julius Malema’s Pan-African Vision”
CAF president and billionaire businessman Patrice Motsepe is facing growing public debate after old comments supporting African unity and softer borders resurfaced online, with many South Africans now comparing his views to those long promoted by EFF leader Julius Malema.
Motsepe previously argued that Africans are “one people” and that many borders across the continent were artificially created during colonial rule. His comments were aimed at promoting African economic integration, easier trade, investment, movement of talent and stronger continental cooperation through initiatives linked to the African Union and AfCFTA.
Julius Malema has repeatedly made similar arguments over the years, saying Africa was divided by colonial powers and that African nations should work toward greater unity instead of treating fellow Africans as foreigners.
The resurfaced clips have now triggered intense debate on social media, especially at a time when South Africa continues facing high unemployment, illegal immigration concerns, pressure on public services and growing anti-immigration protests in some communities.
Critics argue that open-border style policies could place even more pressure on jobs, healthcare, housing and crime prevention inside South Africa. Others say wealthy elites promote Pan-Africanism while ordinary citizens deal with the real economic consequences on the ground.
Supporters of Motsepe’s position, however, argue that Africa cannot economically compete globally while remaining divided by restrictive borders, visa barriers and weak regional cooperation. They believe stronger African integration could unlock trade, industrial growth and investment opportunities across the continent.
Some political analysts also point out that Motsepe’s comments were largely made from an economic integration perspective, while Malema’s messaging is often tied to political Pan-Africanism and anti-colonial rhetoric.
Still, many South Africans online are now asking the same question:
If Patrice Motsepe says African borders are artificial, why are people treated differently when Julius Malema says something similar? 🇿🇦🌍🔥
