OVER 31,000 HECTARES IDENTIFIED FOR WINTER MAIZE PRODUCTION IN KABWE

In an effort to combat the devastating effects of drought on the maize crop, the Central Province administration has identified over 31,000 hectares of land in water frontages that can be immediately utilized for winter maize production. This announcement was made by Central Province Permanent Secretary Milner Mwanakampwe during the opening of the Provincial Development Coordinating Committee (PDCC) Meeting at Nkrumah University in Kabwe.

Mr. Mwanakampwe revealed that a preliminary assessment conducted by the Department of Agriculture in the region indicated that more than 70 percent of the planted maize crop had been destroyed due to the adverse impact of drought. Acknowledging the urgent need to avoid food shortages and alleviate hunger, the provincial administration is engaging with stakeholders in the private sector to provide irrigation equipment to small-scale farmers. This initiative will enable year-round farming and enhance food security within the region.

In his address, the Permanent Secretary called upon the heads of government departments, particularly the District Commissioners, to assist in identifying affected residents and exploring possible solutions. This collaborative effort aims to provide effective assistance to those affected by the devastating drought, ensuring their survival and livelihoods.

The identification of over 31,000 hectares of land for winter maize production offers hope and a proactive solution to the challenges faced by farmers in the region. By engaging with the private sector and providing irrigation equipment, the provincial administration is taking crucial steps to mitigate the impact of drought and ensure a stable supply of maize for the community.

As the Central Province administration works diligently towards finding sustainable solutions, the collaborative efforts between government officials and private stakeholders serve as an inspiring example of proactive and responsive governance. By addressing the immediate challenges of food security, they are laying the foundation for a more resilient and prosperous agricultural sector in Kabwe and beyond.
