Over 1,000 Nigerians Have Voluntarily Registered To Leave South Africa Amid Rising Anti-Immigrant Tensions

Nigeria joins Ghana to repatriate its citizens from South Africa as anti-immigration tensions continue to rise.

So far, more than 1,000 Nigerian nationals have registered to voluntarily return home from South Africa.

The Nigerian government says it fears for the safety of its citizens in South Africa who have been targeted by anti-immigration groups.

The first group of returnees has begun departing South Africa under a repatriation programme coordinated by the Nigerian government.

According to Statistics South Africa, there are around 30,000 documented and over 400,000 undocumented Nigerians living in South Africa.

South Africans are blaming African migrants for contributing to unemployment, crime, and pressure on public services.
